Overview
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) is a non-invasive procedure used to treat kidney stones. It uses high-energy shock waves to break stones into tiny pieces that can be passed naturally in urine.
The Procedure
You lie on a water-filled cushion, and X-rays or ultrasound are used to target the stone. Shock waves pass through your body to the stone, breaking it apart. The procedure typically takes about an hour and may be done under light sedation.
Recovery
Most patients go home the same day. You may experience some blood in your urine and bruising on your back. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out the stone fragments over the next few weeks.
