Overview
Laser lithotripsy is a procedure to break apart kidney stones in the urinary tract. It is done using a ureteroscope, a thin flexible tube with a camera, so no incisions are needed.
The Procedure
The surgeon passes the ureteroscope through the urethra and bladder into the ureter or kidney. Once the stone is located, a laser fiber is used to break it into dust or small fragments that can be removed with a basket.
Recovery
This is typically an outpatient procedure. A stent may be placed temporarily to keep the ureter open and help with healing. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days.
