Overview

PCNL is a surgical procedure to remove large kidney stones (typically larger than 2cm) that cannot be treated effectively with ESWL or ureteroscopy.

The Procedure

A small incision (about 1cm) is made in the back. A tube is inserted directly into the kidney. Instruments are passed through the tube to break up and remove the stone.

Recovery

Patients usually stay in the hospital for 1-2 days. A drainage tube may be left in the kidney for a short time. Full recovery takes about 1-2 weeks.

Benefits

Effective for Large Stones

The most effective way to clear large or complex stones in a single procedure.
