Overview
Pyelonephritis is a type of urinary tract infection (UTI) that generally begins in your urethra or bladder and travels to one or both of your kidneys. It requires prompt medical attention.
Symptoms
- Fever and chills
- Back, side (flank), or groin pain
- Frequent, painful urination
- Nausea and vomiting
Causes
Bacteria that enter the urinary tract through the urethra can multiply and travel to your kidneys. Kidney stones or structural abnormalities can increase the risk.
Treatment
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are the first line of treatment. Severe infections may require hospitalization and intravenous (IV) antibiotics.
