Overview
TURBT is the primary surgical treatment for bladder cancer. It allows the surgeon to remove the tumor from the bladder wall and obtain tissue for biopsy to determine the cancer stage and grade.
The Procedure
The procedure is performed through the urethra using a cystoscope, so there are no external incisions. The surgeon uses a wire loop to cut out the tumor and cauterize the area.
Recovery
Most patients can go home the same day or the next. You may have a catheter for a short time. Follow-up typically involves regular cystoscopies to monitor for recurrence.
