Overview
A urovaginal fistula is an abnormal opening between the urinary tract (bladder, ureter, or urethra) and the vagina. This results in continuous, involuntary leakage of urine.
Symptoms
- Continuous urinary leakage from the vagina
- Foul-smelling urine
- Recurrent vaginal or urinary tract infections
- Skin irritation around the genital area
Causes
Most fistulas in developed countries are caused by injury during pelvic surgery (such as hysterectomy). Other causes include prolonged labor, radiation therapy, or pelvic trauma.
Treatment
Surgical Repair
Treatment is almost always surgical. The repair can be performed through the vagina or abdomen, depending on the location of the fistula, to close the opening and restore normal function.
