Overview
Interstitial Cystitis, also known as Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS), is a chronic condition causing bladder pressure, bladder pain, and sometimes pelvic pain. The pain can range from mild discomfort to severe.
Symptoms
- Pain in your pelvis or between the vagina and anus.
- A persistent, urgent need to urinate.
- Frequent urination, often of small amounts, throughout the day and night.
- Pain during sexual intercourse.
Causes
The exact cause is unknown, but it may involve a defect in the protective lining of the bladder, an autoimmune reaction, or nerve sensitivity.
Treatment
Management
Dietary changes (avoiding triggers like caffeine or spicy foods), physical therapy, and oral medications can help manage symptoms.
Procedures
Bladder instillations (washing the bladder with a solution) or nerve stimulation may be recommended for more severe cases.
