Overview
Neurogenic bladder refers to bladder dysfunction caused by neurologic damage. This can lead to inability to store urine (incontinence) or inability to empty the bladder (retention).
Causes
Common causes in the elderly include stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, or complications from diabetes.
Management
Catheterization
Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC) or indwelling catheters to manage retention.
Medication
Drugs to relax the bladder muscle or reduce spasms.
