Overview
PCNL is a minimally invasive surgery to remove large kidney stones (usually over 2cm) through a small incision in the back. It is the most effective way to clear large stone burdens.
The Procedure
A small tube is inserted directly into the kidney. Instruments are passed through the tube to break up and remove the stone. This avoids the need for a large open incision.
Recovery
Hospital stay is typically 1-2 days. Recovery is faster than open surgery, but longer than ESWL or ureteroscopy. It is highly effective for complete stone clearance.
