Overview

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in older men. In geriatric patients, the goal of treatment is often to manage the disease effectively while minimizing side effects and maintaining a high quality of life.

Symptoms

  • Early stages often have no symptoms.
  • Advanced stages may cause trouble urinating, blood in urine/semen, or bone pain.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis involves PSA blood tests, Digital Rectal Exams (DRE), and prostate biopsy if indicated.

Treatment

Active Surveillance

For slow-growing cancers in older men, closely monitoring the cancer without immediate treatment is often the best option.

Advanced Care

Hormone therapy, radiation, or surgery may be recommended depending on the cancer's aggression and the patient's overall health.
