Overview
A hydrocele is a collection of fluid around the testicle, causing the scrotum to swell. It is common in newborns and often resolves on its own within the first year.
Symptoms
The main symptom is a painless swelling of the scrotum. The size may change throughout the day.
Treatment
Observation
In infants, hydroceles often disappear without treatment by age 1.
Surgery
If the hydrocele persists beyond 12-18 months or is associated with a hernia, a simple outpatient surgery is performed to close the connection and drain the fluid.
