Overview
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin covering the tip of the penis. When performed in the newborn period, it is a quick and generally safe procedure.
Benefits
- Easier hygiene
- Decreased risk of urinary tract infections in infancy
- Lower risk of penile cancer later in life
- Prevention of phimosis (tight foreskin)
The Procedure
The procedure is performed using local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. It typically takes about 15-20 minutes. We use sterile techniques and established methods (such as the Plastibell or Gomco clamp).
Aftercare
Healing usually takes about a week. Parents are provided with detailed instructions on how to care for the area, including keeping it clean and applying petroleum jelly.
