Overview
Neurogenic bladder is a term used to describe bladder problems caused by injury or disease of the nerves that control the bladder. This can lead to difficulty storing or emptying urine.
Causes
Common causes include spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, stroke, spina bifida, and diabetes.
Symptoms
- Urinary incontinence (leakage)
- Urinary retention (inability to empty bladder)
- Frequent urination
- Urgency
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
Management
Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC)
Using a catheter to empty the bladder at regular intervals.
Medications
Drugs to relax the bladder muscle (anticholinergics) or improve emptying.
Botox Injections
Injections into the bladder muscle to treat overactivity.
