Overview
Peyronie’s disease is a condition where fibrous scar tissue develops on the penis and causes curved, painful erections. It can prevent you from having sex or make it difficult to get or maintain an erection.
Symptoms
- Scar tissue (plaques) you can feel under the skin
- A significant bend to the penis
- Erection problems (erectile dysfunction)
- Shortening of the penis
- Pain during erections
Causes
The cause is often repeated injury to the penis, such as damage during sex, athletic activity, or an accident. Genetics and age may also play a role.
Treatment
Medications
Medications like collagenase clostridium histolyticum can be injected into the scar tissue to break it down.
Surgery
Surgical options include suturing (plicating) the unaffected side, incision/excision and grafting, or penile implants for severe cases.
