Overview
Orchidectomy is the surgical removal of one or both testicles. It is a common procedure performed for various medical reasons, including cancer treatment and trauma.
Indications
- Testicular cancer
- Severe trauma or injury
- Testicular torsion (if tissue death has occurred)
- Prostate cancer (to lower testosterone levels)
The Procedure
The surgery can be performed through an incision in the groin (radical inguinal orchidectomy) or the scrotum (simple orchidectomy), depending on the reason for the surgery.
Recovery
Recovery typically takes a few weeks. Patients are advised to use ice packs and scrotal support to minimize swelling and discomfort. Most can return to work within 1-2 weeks.
