Overview
A spermatocele is an abnormal sac (cyst) that develops in the epididymis, the small, coiled tube located on the upper testicle that collects and transports sperm. It is usually non-cancerous and painless.
Symptoms
- A lump or swelling near the top of the testicle
- Heaviness in the testicle
- Pain or discomfort (rare)
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is usually made through a physical exam. Transillumination (shining a light through the scrotum) or an ultrasound may be used to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment
Observation
If the spermatocele is small and not causing pain, no treatment is needed.
Surgery
Spermatocelectomy (surgical removal) may be recommended if the cyst becomes large, painful, or bothersome.
