Overview
Circumcision is the surgical removal of the skin covering the tip of the penis. It is a common procedure performed for newborn boys, but can also be done for adults.
Indications
Medical reasons for adult circumcision include phimosis (tight foreskin), paraphimosis (foreskin stuck behind the head), and recurrent balanitis (infection of the foreskin).
The Procedure
The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia for adults. The foreskin is removed, and the remaining skin is stitched to the base of the glans.
Recovery
Healing usually takes about 10 days. Patients are advised to avoid sexual activity for at least 4-6 weeks to allow the area to heal completely.
