Overview
A penile implant is a device that is surgically placed inside the penis to allow men with erectile dysfunction (ED) to get an erection. It is typically recommended when other treatments have failed.
Types of Implants
Inflatable Implants
The most common type. Cylinders are placed in the penis and inflated with fluid from a reservoir using a pump placed in the scrotum.
Malleable (Semi-Rigid) Rods
Flexible rods are placed in the penis. They are always firm but can be bent into position for sexual activity or concealed.
The Procedure
The surgery is performed under anesthesia. Incisions are made to insert the device components. The procedure usually takes about an hour.
Recovery
Recovery takes about 4-6 weeks. Pain medication and antibiotics are prescribed. Patients are taught how to use the device once healing is complete.
