Overview
Pyeloplasty is a surgery to remove a blockage at the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ), where the kidney meets the ureter. This blockage can cause urine to back up into the kidney, leading to pain and potential damage.
Indications
It is performed to treat UPJ obstruction, which can be congenital or develop over time. Symptoms include flank pain, kidney stones, and infections.
The Procedure
The narrowed area is removed, and the ureter is reattached to the renal pelvis to create a wider opening. It is often performed laparoscopically or robotically.
Recovery
A stent is usually placed to keep the ureter open during healing and removed a few weeks later. Most patients experience significant relief from symptoms.
