Overview

Ureteric stones are kidney stones that have moved down into the ureter (the tube connecting the kidney to the bladder). They can cause blockage and severe pain (renal colic).

Symptoms

  • Severe pain in the side and back, below the ribs
  • Pain radiating to the lower abdomen and groin
  • Blood in urine
  • Nausea and vomiting

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is typically confirmed with a CT scan (CT KUB), which shows the size and location of the stone.

Treatment

Medical Management

Small stones may pass on their own with pain medication and plenty of fluids.

Ureteroscopy

For larger stones, a scope is used to remove or break up the stone.

Shockwave Lithotripsy

Sound waves are used to break the stone into smaller pieces from outside the body.
