Overview
Ureteroscopy involves passing a small telescope (ureteroscope) through the urethra and bladder into the ureter. It allows the urologist to see inside the urinary tract without making an incision.
Uses
- Removing stones in the ureter or kidney
- Diagnosing and treating tumors
- Investigating blockage or strictures
- Evaluating blood in the urine
The Procedure
The procedure is usually done under general anesthesia. If a stone is found, it can be removed with a basket or broken up with a laser. A stent may be placed to keep the ureter open.
Recovery
It is typically an outpatient procedure. Patients may experience mild discomfort or urinary frequency for a short time, especially if a stent is placed.
