Overview
Urethrotomy (also known as Direct Vision Internal Urethrotomy or DVIU) is a surgery to treat a narrowing of the urethra (stricture). It involves cutting the stricture to widen the channel.
The Procedure
A cystoscope with a small knife or laser is passed into the urethra. The surgeon locates the stricture and makes an incision to open it up. No external incisions are needed.
Recovery
A catheter is usually left in place for a few days to allow the urethra to heal in the open position. Most patients can return to work within a few days.
Outcomes
Urethrotomy provides immediate relief from symptoms. However, strictures can recur, and some patients may require further treatment or urethroplasty.
